| Hydrant Fire Fighting Systems |
| Introduction |
A well designed and well laid hydrant system is the back bone of the entire fire fighting equipments as it fights fire of serious proportions in all classes of risks and continues to be in full operation even if parts of affected buildings and or structures have collapsed and also keeps cool all adjoining properties thereby minimizing the exposure hazards.
It also has the advantage of providing for possible future extensions in any scheme of hydrant protection with mains of what larger capacity than immediate requirement at small additional cost.
The efficiency in fire fighting will ultimately depend upon the rapidity with which it is brought into action and the ability with which its efforts directed.
The maintenance of an installation is equally vital and the importance of organized wet drills at regular intervals which ensure that each man carries out his allotted duties in the shortest possible time is strongly emphasized. |
| |
| Classification of occupancies |
| As the Water Supply, Pumping Capacity and other features of the Hydrant System depend not only on the size of the risk but also on its fire growth and spread potentialities. The risks are to be categorized under the following classes for the purpose of Hydrant System Design. |
| |
 |
Light hazard occupancies |
 |
Ordinary hazard occupancies |
 |
High hazard occupancies (a) |
 |
High hazard occupancies (b) |
|
| |
| Water Supply |
| Water for the hydrant service shall be stored in any easily accessible surface under ground-lined reservoir or above ground tanks of steel, concrete, or masonry. The effective capacity of the reservoir (Above the foot valve seat in case of negative suction and above the level of the top of pump casing in case of positive suction) will differ for various clauses of occupancies and the size of hydrant installations. The reservoir will exclusively be reserved for hydrant service only. |
| |
| Electric Supply |
| The electric supply to the pumping sets shall be entirely independent of all other equipments in the premises i.e. even when the power throughout the entire premises is switched off the supply to the pump shall continue to be available uninterrupted. This can be achieved by taking the connection for pumps from the incoming side of the main L.T. Breaker. |
|
| Salient Features Of Hydrant System |
| Automatic System |
Generally the ring main and wet riser shall be charged with water at a pressure of 7kg\sq.m. If there is any pressure loss due to minor leakage in the pipeline or due to evaporation, the jockey pump which will be set at a pressure will come into operation and maintain the required pressure in the pipeline. On operation of one or more hydrant points, pressure will fall down. This fall in pressure will actuate the pressure switch set at a particular set point lower than the jockey pump. This will send the control signal to the motor switchgear, thereby bringing the motor driven pump into operation thus replenishing the loss of pressure. Incase the motor driven pump does not come into operation due to power failure or malfunction, pressure in the line will further fall down actuating a second pressure in the line will further fall down actuating a second pressure switch set at a further lower set level. This will automatically make the standby diesel engine pump to operate, supplying water to the system. Invariably switching off of both the pumps shall be manual.
The unlined flex canvas hoses and allied equipments will be housed in a metal chamber and will be located around the buildings with metal frame glass shutters and also inside the high risk building near by the internal Hydrant Valves.
The Controlled Percolating hoses provided will be as per I S 8423 and T A C approved make. |
